Mental Health Recovery 101

When I was about the age of sixteen, I read a quote by Devika Fernando that read:

“We are not given a good life or a bad life. We are given a life, it’s up to us to make it good or bad.”

This quote always resonated with me because it really shows us the true power of our thoughts.

In this post, we’re going to be talking about how I got myself out of addiction and rock bottom, and started living by my own standards.

Rock bottom looks different for everyone. Hitting rock bottom only teaches you the things you couldn’t possibly see from the highest mountain tops.

If you have hit your lowest point, that is OKAY! It is actually the best place to be at the beginning of your mental health recovery. I say this because you can only go up from that point, and at rock bottom, what else do you really have to lose?

At your lowest, what are some of the thoughts that are going through your head?

Maybe that you aren’t good enough, or that you’re undeserving, the list can go on.

But did you know that your body is your vehicle, and your thoughts are in the driver's seat?

Here’s an example:

You’re driving down the road and you think to yourself.... “I sure have seen a lot of yellow cars recently” There you have it, you now notice every single yellow car on the road.

This is the same as waking up in the morning and saying “today is going to be a terrible day.”

Your mind puts the spotlight on all the negative or inconvenient things that happened in your day, and you have a terrible day.

Are we starting to see the pattern? Welcome to the Law of Attraction, my dear friends. This is where your life changes.

The Law of Attraction says that the energy we put out into the Universe; is the energy we receive. Simple enough, right?

In Science we learn that everything in the Universe is vibrating at its own frequency. Even human beings. If you are dwelling, or feeling any intense negative emotions, you are not vibrating at the same frequency as your positive thoughts/desires. When we only put out negative energy, the Law of Attraction will attract the same level of negative energy back into your life.

When you start focusing on the positive aspects of your life, and you are putting your passions out into the world, you attract the people and opportunities in your life that you desire.

Living by the Law of Attraction is a lot simpler than you would think. All you need to do is adjust the thoughts you have.

You acknowledge your emotion, validate it, and allow yourself to FEEL without judging yourself. We are all so quick to have a negative thought and blame ourselves for feeling that way. You are human, and emotions are a big part of being human. Allowing your thoughts to come and go without attaching judgment on yourself is so important. We have enough people judging us in this world, don’t add yourself to the list.

We talk so much about being an ally for others when we aren’t an ally for ourselves. Speak kindly about yourself. Show yourself compassion. Treat yourself how you would treat those you love in the same position. Allow yourself to be human without beating yourself up, and be your biggest fan.

Change your thoughts and you will change your life
